What About Rental Insurance?

I rent now and I was wondering if it was worth having rental insurance. We don't have a lot of high end stuff but what we do have we use. I was only thinking of getting $10,000 worth of insurance on my contents. I'm sure it's not worth much more than that. What do you think? Is rental insurance worth the money?

I don't know about the laws where you live, however besides being covered for your property, you should also have liability coverage. You don't want to be on the hook if you are deemed liable for a fire for example.

It is absolutely worth it unless you can both afford to pay for everything you could lose AND you don't mind paying for everything you could lose even if the loss is not your fault. We had a water heater burst and the water ruined everything we had touching the floor, bed posts, dressers, computer desks, etc. The first time the heater burst, we did not have renter's insurance and the apartment complex refused to pay for anything citing we should have had renter's insurance. So I coughed up the $80 to get $25,000 coverage and the next time the water heater burst, the insurance covered all of our losses.

Wow Fergie, Sounds like a major disaster to me. I'm glad you had insurance for the second instance. Anna, yes I would invest in rental insurance. As Freddie said, there is the possibility of liability also. You do need something that would help you to replace your things if you have a disaster such as a flood or a fire. I would definitely get insurance-as much as you can afford to carry.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the answers. Yes, I do plan to get more than just the $10,000 dollars. I am going to get as much as I can afford. We currently rent a house trailer and I am not comfortable not having insurance at all. I appreciate the advice!

Renter's Insurance is not a bad buy. Get as much as you can for as cheap as you can. It's not very expensive and will be a Godsend if you ever have to file a claim. You would hate to lose all your stuff because of someone's negligence or just anything that can happen unexpectedly.

Absolutely, Renters Insurance is like any other kind of insurance. It may seem like a chore to make those payments, but if something does happen; you will be so relieved that you have it. I wish you the best.

I think I'll get the insurance then, even if I do think the whole insurance world is one big scamA confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; . You never know, maybe there is one decent, honest, insurance agent out there.

Yes, that would be a good idea. It is amazing the amount of homes I have heard about recently that have caught on fire. If you are renting in that situation, you would losing everything. At least if you had renter's insurance you would be reimbursed monetarily, so you could replace most of your items.

Always.

I once rented a condo which was a nice place and all but it was unknown to us at the time (a bunch of college folk) put together with bubble gum and duct tape. We had a very hard rain and the place was not sealed properly, so we had a huge mess to deal with above the kitchen sink. Water collected over night and it flooded the two rooms (kitchen and dinning), without insurance that would have cost more than all 4 of us made at the time.
