Utility Company Cut-Off Scam

Utility Company Cut-Off Scam

North Carolina seniors recently have received calls or visits from individuals claiming to be with the water, gas or electric company. The visitors or callers claim that the utilities bill is past due and that service will be cut off that day. They solicit the senior's check, creditMoney loaned or the ability of an individual or company to borrow money. card number or checking account number so they can obtain payment of the bill and late charges immediately rather than ordering disconnection. In the face-to-face transactions, the visitors seek cash. The visitors or callers are not with the utility company.

The best comeback I have used on this one is to tell seniors to tell the people, "OK, I owe you money, I will call you right back." Once they hang up, they call the utility company using the number on their latest bill. The utility company has said "we did not call" 100% of the time. Get the word out to seniors to just hang up and call the utility company back so they really know to whom they are talking.
