Speeding from the pump

I lost my job at a gas station because several coots took a liking to driving off without paying. It was a self-serve station and there were usually 2 of us, but when the station got busy, it was difficult to keep tabs on everyone. Most people would be honest enough and wait but on several occasions, a few just drove off without paying. I had to bear the loss for the shortages each time - but after a while, the boss let me go.

Be glad the boss let you go! He did you a favor. That job will get you killed ... or even worse, seriously hurt! I had customers who drove off and I would be damned if I was going to run after them for the amount of money I was getting paid! Count your blessings and get a safer job!

Places where I get gas have a system that photographs the license plate when they try and take off without paying. Oh and if they can't see your plate they won't turn on the pump.

Same here. If they can read your license plate where I live, they won't even turn on the pump unless you are prepaying. I haven't seen anyone drive off, but I hear it happens a lot and goes up significantly when the price of gas rises. Sucks you got fired over that ... I wouldn't risk my health or life trying to stop people stealing $30 or $40 worth of gas. Just not worth it!
