Sound Alike Charties and Law Enforcement Groups

Many charity groups like to adopt names that resemble those of well-known charities. Others may adopt a name that sounds like an official law enforcement agency. Telephone solicitors like to use police-sounding names because they know people support law enforcement and may be intimidated by a call from someone who appears to be representing a police organization. Always check out such groups (and ask how much of your money will go to a professional solicitor) before contributing to them.

How can you even tell? When they call here for my family I always tell them that I donate local and I actually hand in my funds at the precinct.

I have stopped giving over the phone completely! If I don't get some paper in the mail that points to a physical location with phone numbers and directors listed, I don't give!
