Scammers mail postcards informing recipients that money or property in their names has been located. Recipients are urged to call a toll-free number for further details. Consumers who call are told that they need to provide important financial information, including checking account numbers, social security numbers and mothers’ maiden names in order to have the money or property released. Consumers who do this have their checking accounts electronically debited, sometimes repeatedly. Even worse, their financial information is used to commit identity theftCrime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personal information, such as Social Security or driver's license numbers, in order to impersonate someone else..

Think of giving out your bank account information and/or social security number over the phone as a sin. Never give out this info on the phone. Banks don't even ask you for the account numbers. They ask you a series of annoying questions to prove you are you.

I read a very good idea in another post on this site. Ask the guy/gal on the phone if you can come down and give your bank account and SSN in person escorted by the cops. Surely a legitimate person asking for this information from you would not mind. In fact, they would welcome the additional protection you have requested!

I get emails like these but I have never gotten a phone call before. How do they get your phone number when this happens?
