Married for a green card
I told her it wasn't love but she was bitten by his charm and lyrics. When she started to believe me she asked me if I thought the relationship would still last. I told her it wouldn't and I was right. He had hardly gotten the green card than he started treating her badly and they eneded up in divorce.

At least in a situation like this she has some recourse. She can inform the INS that she believes that the marriage was genuine on her behalf but that she was taken, and that he was doing it just for the green card. She can also refuse to sign off on his renewal after the first two years is over.
I bet he didn't know about that part of the process before he began getting all worked up. Some people are just up to no good.
It used to be that a person could marry a citizen in order to gain citizenship but things have changed a lot through the years. I think you will find that your friend's soon-to-be ex will be in for a surprise the next time he goes to see the INS. There are rules on how long a marriage has to be as well as the length of time spouses must co-habitate in order to qualify as a real marriage.
I do like the idea of tougher rules but its still always going to be people who try to cheatBetrayal, a form of deception or dismissal of prior presumptions, is the breaking or violation of a presumptive social contract (trust, or confidence) that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations. the system. Even though who are legit on the US side but end up with a marriage to someone that only wants to be a US citizen still make my stomach turn.
Same thing happens up here in Canada. The rules have been toughened up. I hope the boot him back to wherever it was he came from. If he isn't welcome in his home country and he is this kind of person I won't feel sorry for whatever they do to him there.
A friend of mine married a Portuguese man last summer and he still has to go through the same process to gain citizenship as any other immigrant nowadays. I think the man who took your friend for a ride is in for a very rude awakening when his green card runs out.
I was going to marry a girl from another country for the amount of money she said she was going to pay me. She said I didn't have to live with her or anything, but just stayed married long enough for her to gain citizenship. Is this legal and is $25,000 USD enough to stay hitched for a few years? She is not holding me responsible for any of the normal crap associated with marriage which is cool. She just wants citizenship in the US.
On Desperate Housewives last night, one of the women decided to marry an old boyfriend so he could stay in the U.S. My mom had a friend who met a man from Israel and married him very fast. He was such a jerk. He only wanted to become a citizen.
Face blurred to protect identity, I recommend not touching that with a ten foot pole. Most of the marriage for green card stuff you hear about involves men who are real jerks. The women can be just as bad. Keep in mind if you are legally married you have to get legally divorced. She would be entitled to half of what you have. She might be able to take back the $25,000 with interest.
Freddie, that is some good advice. Not only could he be out of a lot of money, but could also do jail time if caught. It is good to know that the INS is cracking down on the laws. So many people get hurt, just by wanting to love someone who is only using them.
