Lawyer Letter
I recently received a letter from a lawyer in the next state, claiming that I was the defendant in a case recently opened in that state. When I called the courts, there was no such case, nothing involving me, and it has since been almost two months and I have not received papers.
I was terrified when I got the letter-and I'm sure that most people just call up the lawyer and start handing over money.

Scary one. I would hate to see this one work on somebody. The nerve of the crooks posing as attorneys.

I wonder if it was crooks posing as an attorney or a crooked attorney trying to drum up business? I could easily envision someone with little common sense get in a panic and hire the attorney on the spot. The attorney could then take the money and just send a letter saying it was all cleared up.
Sounds like it could be an identity theftCrime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personal information, such as Social Security or driver's license numbers, in order to impersonate someone else. attempt, as well. If you had taken the letter at face value and contacted the lawyer, you would have thought nothing of giving all the personal details needed to prove you didn't do whatever you are accused of doing. Good job on checking it out on your own instead of falling for it.
