Have you ever "gotten got" in eBay?

I've been a buyer at eBay since May of 2006, and for the most part, I have had no problems in ordering and getting items, particularly in the Buy It Now options.

There was one time, though, that a seller offered a used PC game and claimed it was glitch free. I really wanted that game because it was $20 off the MSRP and $10 less than what Amazon asked for a new copy, so I bought it.

What happened? The packaging looked almost new, and the manual and other supplements were included, but disc 2 had a file that refused to install no matter what I tried. I looked at the disc's underside, which is where the data pits are, and it had no scratches. I called PC-savvy friends of mine - they took it home and tried to install it on their machines...no luck there either.

Had the seller said on eBay that the software was defective, I wouldn't have bought it. He didn't, but he did say all sales were finals and that no returns/refunds were accepted.

Because of fraud, and sellers lying about a products condition...I very seldom will even LOOK at Ebay auctions.

Not too long ago, there were a bunch of people who went around selling home made CD bootlegs, and trying to pass them off as the genuine article! They were so cheap and stupid, they sometimes did not even include a CD case or sleeve with the deal!

Ask yourself this, if the disk is in perfect condition, why would he claim that it was glitch-free? Thats like saying "Not a ScamA confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; ".

Even though he says that all sales are final, he falsely advertised the product, report him to the eBay admins and they'll try and sort it out.

I do a little buying on Ebay and I know there are some people who don't sell what they promise. It's not easy to be 100% sure that a person is a genuine seller and won't scamA confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; you , but I stick to buying from people who have a feedback score above 99 and have at least sold 100 or more items on Ebay. The feedback is from the buyers who bought his products in the past. After reading those, you can know about the person's integrity as a seller before you decide to buy from him/her.

I wouldn't say expressly that I was "got", but I have bought ebooks that turned out to be more or less unusable for me but someone who is more advanced.

I have bought mainly books on Ebay, there was onee time I bought a laptop and it wasn't working when I got it and I returned it and my money was refunded.

Feedback is good, yes...but it certainly is not foolproof.

Then again, is anything truly foolproof?

Regardless, I dislike Ebay and avoid it as much as humanly possible.

Occasionally I will browse it, and be VERY tempted to bid on something....but I usually stop it at that.

How do you know it was the fault of the seller? It may have just been a software problem due to the company that created it. I have had that happen to me once, but it turned out that I just needed to download a patch.

I haven't "gotten got" on eBay, no. I've had very good luck with the things I've bought there over the years. That said, I usually just buy things that are non-tech and non-electronic so the chance of something being "bad" is lessened.

In hearing your experience, I'm wondering if maybe the seller didn't know the item was defective? I've sold some CDs and videos on eBay and although I always play them to make sure everything is fine, that doesn't mean they wouldn't give the buyer trouble for whatever reason.

It is really rather easy to protect yourself from getting scammed on eBay - just buy from sellers with high feedback rating that looks real. I've never been scammed on eBay, although I really haven't done too much buying. I used to sell over there all the time, and have had two people accuse me of scamming them! But... both instances were a case of crazy buyer who thought their purchase should get to them the next day.

eBay is probably the worst of the online marketplaces as far as security goes. They are bad for the sellers and the buyers. I have been ripped off a few times by sellers with good feedback. It appears they know the products are broken before they send them out. Then they ask for the product back and will issue a refund for the price of the item only! If I send it back without Delivery Confirmation or a Tracking Number, they claim to never have received the packages and I was left with nothing!

Amazon was much safer. Had only 1 crushed product from an Amazon seller and they sent a replacement overnight.
