Companies selling shoddy products
I bought a television this past February (an RCA TruFlat) and it never worked right from day one. I mean, it was watchable and all but everytime it got moved to another room (I switched the house around) or unplugged, you would have to spend twenty minutes reprogramming it. I thought that it was just the way it was made at the time - aggravating but livable. Then in June, the television started not working right. It would all of a sudden go off by itself and have to be set up again. After a week or so, it wouldn't program at all but randomly would work for a day and then not work again.
I called RCA so-called customer service and the gentleman was very nice. He told me right out that there had been "a lot of reports" like mine and that the television was defective. He told me that they would send me a return shipping label to send it back and they would send me a new one at no cost to me. Sounds like good service, right? Did to me. He said someone would call me to get all the information and tell me how to send it back.
A couple days later, a lady called and got the information and then asked me for a creditMoney loaned or the ability of an individual or company to borrow money. card. I was like, why do you need that? She said I needed to pay $73.50 to get the new television. I told her the very nice man that I spoke to said there would be no charge as it was a defective product and she just said "well, he was wrong". She said the warranty is only for 90 days so you have to pay. I argued with her and then she got very rude and nasty, like I was trying to rip them off or something.
Since the television only cost $150, I was not about to spend half of that to replace it after only five months. Plus, it never worked correctly because the first guy told me that it should have stayed programmed and I should have only had to do it one time. I sent two emails complaining about this and trying to get them to see that they should honor what was said to me but they would not. I will never buy another RCA product again.

I actually had a RCA TruFlat also. Maybe you should consider yourself lucky. My TV actually caught fire. Fortunately I was home. I had walked out of the livingroom into the bedroom when I heard a POP come from the livingroom. I went to see what it was and smelled something burning. The TV popped a couple more times and I could see sparks. I ran over and unplugged it. That TV was still under the 90 day warranty. In fact, it was only a week old. Neither RCA or the store it was purchased from would refund my money.
What reason did RCA give you for not honoring their own warranty? By law, they have to honor the warranty at the very least and in some states there are even more conditions. If I were you, I would contact the BBB and any consumer protection agencies in your state. My case was debatable because of the time frame but they have no excuse in your case.
Whoa! They should have given your money back. Did they offer another TV by a different company? I wouldn't even want a new RCA if my TV caught fire! BBB is the way to go. Big stores will usually honor the request you put in to the BBB. Ask for your money back in the letter and the big boys will honor those pesky BBB letters.

I have never bought a RCA brand before and now I am sure I won't, I stick to brands like Sony and Toshiba. I would pursue that warranty, if they continue to get off the hook they will continue to do it.
I have had several RCA products that worked very well for me in the past. These TruFlats must have been poor design from day one. However I cannot for the life of me, understand why a store would not honor their warranty, especially under the circumstances as described by Leary. I'd have thought that they would be bending over backwards to keep that customer happy.
