Can I Get My Security Deposit Back If I Decide Not To Move In?

I applied to this apartment complex and gave them $25 + $200 for the application fee and security deposit respectively. I found a better place cheaper and decided I did not want the original apartment. The complex is refusing to return my security deposit! I knew the $25 application fee was non-refundable, but what about my security deposit?

They can claim the security deposit was non-refundable also. Why would they require a security deposit before you were even approved to move into the apartment? They sound shady already! Stay away from any and all places that require a security deposit as part of the application process. You should be able to apply separate from having to "secure" the place.
