Appartment In Wales
I did my bachelors degree in Wales, and had a small apartment for the time that I was there. Of course it was a first and last month for security deal.
When I closed out and left, there were some repairs needing to be done (a door handle and loo seat needed replacing). So rather than have the landlord do them and charge the earth I did it myself. Everything was looking good when I left.
He STILL claimed that I left the place a mess. I cleaned for three weeks-he was nothing more than a scammer.

There are many landlords out there that are like this. It also happens just about anywhere you go. So what you really need to do is make sure that you take pictures of when you move it (the condition) and when you move out. This will help you to be able to fight the landlord on the issues.
The problem is most people it is not worth the hassle to fight these landlords and this is why they continue to get away with it.
I have had a very similar thing happen to me also, the last flat i vacated was left totally spotless but the landlord still retained 30% of my deposit for wear and tear, makes me reall angry thinking on it
Yes the photos are an excellent idea, and one that could have saved me in the past too. I lost money in a similar fashion, despite arriving to find damp, mouldy walls and rotten food in the refrigerator. I painted the place and left it in BETTER condition than I found it, and still he charged me.
I am a landlord and I already count the security deposit as part of MY money when I get it. A landlord can always find something to justify keeping your money, whether it's legal or illegal. I have even had my former tenants take me to court. I win every time! I wish I could help you guys out on this one, but this is a legal scamA confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; that will be run until the end of time I am afraid.
